It always feels strange and awkward to write a post for a blog that nobody will be reading, but I guess you have to start somewhere, right?
So, I’ve been toying with the idea of starting a new blog for a while, and what with Dr. George Tiller’s murder I figured it’s as good a time as any to start putting my opinions out there. Not that they’re important or anything, but I spend a lot of time thinking and talking things over anyway (yes, I talk to myself; no, I’m not schizophrenic; no, I’m not entirely sure about that last one), so why not just write it out and publicize it? I like to think that I am not entirely incompreheqzkjegb;txv
Moving on. I actually first heard about Tiller’s death from Unrepentant Old Hippie, which, if you read her blog at all, will probably give you an idea of where I stand on the political spectrum. I remember thinking at first that it didn’t make sense – attacks on abortion doctors were something that happened in years long past. But no, there it was, in bold letters: ‘shot to death this morning’. It obviously wasn’t sinking in, though, because my next response was to tell one of my friends on MSN, and then forget about the whole thing.
It took another one of JJ’s posts (I hope it’s okay to call her that?) to really make me feel something. Actually, it was just watching Randall Terry speak, so calm, so righteous… I started crying. I cried, and I could not stop because this man knew he was right in ways that I could not ever understand. ‘He was one of the most evil people on the planet.’ Seriously? If I actually believed, even a little bit, that Dr. Tiller was performing abortions out of a desire to hurt, to revel in the deaths of little babies, with any malicious intent, then yes. Of course he would be evil. Of course he would be a monster. But there is no indication whatsoever that this was the case. In fact, and I’m sure this will come as a great surprise, he seems to have been a caring and compassionate human being! And they killed him – Scott Roeder, Randall Terry, and everyone who has propagated vicious anti-abortion rhetoric; they are all to some degree complicit in this crime. And I cannot forgive them for it.
